Eastbound and Thrilled: A Dragonfly 800’s New Life on PEI
There’s nothing quite like hearing from passionate owners discovering the joy, speed, and seaworthiness of their Dragonfly trimaran. This month, we’re thrilled to spotlight Peter and Sabina, proud new owners of DF800 hull #235, Trigger, now sailing the wild and beautiful waters of Prince Edward Island.
After just four sails in their first two weeks, Peter wrote:
“Martin, she is phenomenal—amazingly fast, stable, seaworthy, and comfortable... We were consistently doing 10–11 knots and hit over 14 knots without any drama.”
Peter & Sabina -DF800 Owner in Prince Edward Island, Canada
From threading short tacks through tidal currents and six-foot standing waves at the entrance to Tracadie Bay, to gliding effortlessly over mussel beds in light air, Trigger has quickly proven herself capable, responsive, and confidence-inspiring. Peter describes her as a boat that “translates gusts into boat speed”—no drama, no weather helm, just pure trimaran performance.
But great boats don’t just show up ready to sail—they’re built, rebuilt, and passed on with care, becoming a source of pride for every future owner. When I connected Peter with Paul Erb, a DF800 owner, I knew Peter was in good hands. What followed was a fantastic exchange of knowledge, passion, and meticulous preparation. Paul’s attention to detail—from labelling every part to replacing rigging, sails, and electronics—set the stage for a smooth transition.
And that’s something I truly admire in this community:
The Dragonfly community is one of the greatest strengths of owning a Dragonfly. Owners support each other like family. I’m proud to play a role in that as a connector, sharing my technical sailing knowledge from an Olympic dinghy background and trimaran experience to help make these handovers smooth, personalized, and rewarding. It’s more than just matching a boat to a new home. It’s about empowering the next adventure.
Peter and Sabina, in turn, poured themselves into Trigger’s restoration—upgrading lights, refinishing teak, rebedding fittings, repairing the hull and amas, and customizing the interior for their camp-cruising style. With her bowsprit now mounted and a slip reserved on PEI’s east coast, Trigger is nearly ready for a 170 km summer voyage to Cape Breton and perhaps even the Magdalen Islands.
And perhaps the most touching part of Peter’s note?
“For the first time in my life, I find myself really uninterested in monohulls.”
That’s the Dragonfly difference.
We’re building a registry of Dragonfly trimarans across North America to help connect owners and capture more stories like Peter and Sabina’s. If you’re a proud owner, let us know where you are, what model you sail, and what adventures you’re planning. We’d love to share your story next.
Thank you again to Peter, Sabina, and Paul for being such thoughtful and enthusiastic members of the Dragonfly family.
Until next time—fair winds to all.
